The long-awaited redevelopment of the Kempegowda Bus Station, popularly known as Majestic, is finally moving closer to execution. The project, with a budget of Rs 4,997 crore, promises to transform the city's primary inter-city and intra-city bus hub into a modern transport terminal.

Officials have confirmed that the revamp plan has received the necessary approvals. The next steps involve inviting tenders and finalising the construction timeline. The project is expected to be one of the largest infrastructure upgrades in Bengaluru's recent history.

What the Redevelopment Entails

The new design aims to address the chronic congestion at Majestic. The revamped station will feature dedicated arrival and departure bays, improved passenger waiting areas, and better connectivity to the adjacent Metro station.

Commercial spaces will also be developed within the complex. These include retail outlets, food courts, and other passenger amenities. The goal is to create a seamless travel experience for the lakhs of commuters who use the station daily.

Timeline and Budget

The Rs 4,997 crore project will be executed in phases to minimise disruption to existing bus services. State government officials have indicated that the project will be completed over the next few years, but an exact deadline has not been announced.

Funding will come from the state budget and possibly from central government grants for urban infrastructure. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will jointly oversee the development.

The revamp is part of a larger push to modernise Bengaluru's public transport infrastructure. With the city's population growing rapidly, the need for efficient and well-maintained bus terminals has become urgent.

Challenges Ahead

While the plan has been approved, execution will not be without hurdles. Majestic is one of the busiest bus stations in the country, handling over 2.5 lakh passengers daily. Relocating bus services temporarily during construction will require careful planning.

Traffic congestion around the station area is another major concern. The redevelopment will include measures to improve traffic flow, such as dedicated bus lanes and better pedestrian crossings. However, these changes will take time to implement.

Local shopkeepers and small businesses operating within the station may also face disruption. The authorities have said they will work with stakeholders to minimise inconvenience.
