The drive, which began earlier this month, has drawn interest from residents, local businesses, and community groups across Bengaluru. The GBA is coordinating with the city's forest department to supply the saplings.

Requests surpass initial targets

The number of saplings requested—43,000—is significantly higher than what the GBA had initially planned. Officials said the response reflects growing awareness about the need to increase green cover in urban areas.

“We are overwhelmed by the response,” a GBA representative said. “People are eager to plant trees in their neighbourhoods, and we are working to meet the demand.”

The saplings include a mix of native species such as neem, banyan, and peepal, along with fruit-bearing trees like mango and jamun. The GBA has advised applicants to prepare their planting sites in advance.

Deadline and distribution process

The deadline for submitting requests is set for the end of this week. After that, the GBA will verify the applications and begin distributing the saplings in phases.

Distribution will prioritise areas with low tree density. The association has also scheduled follow-up sessions to guide residents on sapling care and maintenance.

“Planting is just the first step,” the GBA representative added. “We want these saplings to survive and thrive, so we will provide support for the first few months.”

Impact on Bengaluru's green cover

Bengaluru has seen a steady decline in its tree cover over the past decade due to rapid urbanisation. Drives like this one are seen as crucial for reversing the trend.

The GBA has been organising plantation drives for several years. Last year, the association distributed over 30,000 saplings, and officials said the survival rate was around 70%.

Local environmentalists have welcomed the initiative. “Community-led efforts are key to restoring Bengaluru's green heritage,” said a city-based ecologist who is not involved with the GBA.
