
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the agency's next major astrophysics observatory, is scheduled to launch on August 30. The mission has cleared its final pre-launch reviews and is now being prepared for integration with its rocket.
Named after NASA's first chief astronomer, the telescope is built to tackle some of the biggest questions in cosmology. Its primary goals include probing the nature of dark energy, cataloguing exoplanets, and surveying the infrared universe with unprecedented speed.
The Roman Space Telescope carries a 288-megapixel wide-field instrument that can capture an area of sky 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope's infrared camera. This allows it to map the cosmos at a rate 1,000 times faster than its predecessor.
Scientists say the observatory will conduct surveys that are currently impossible. It will measure light from a billion galaxies, study the structure of the universe, and directly image exoplanets by blocking out their host stars' light using a coronagraph technology demonstration.
One of Roman's core missions is to understand why the expansion of the universe is accelerating. By surveying thousands of supernovae and mapping the distribution of galaxies, it aims to test theories of dark energy.
The telescope will also peer through cosmic dust to study star formation in our Milky Way and other galaxies. Its infrared vision lets it see regions of space that are obscured in visible light.
NASA is scheduled to host a media briefing next month to detail the mission's timeline and science objectives. The telescope will lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Engineers have completed final testing of the spacecraft's systems and instruments. The observatory is currently being processed at the launch site, with integration to the rocket expected in the coming weeks.
After launch, Roman will travel to the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. It will take roughly 30 days to reach its orbit and begin commissioning.
Once operational, the telescope is expected to collect data for at least five years, though its fuel supply could allow for a longer mission. The first images and science results are likely to come several months after launch.
