
A new proposal is urging Indian cities to embrace a radical shift in urban design โ vertical forest cities where skyscrapers are woven into biodiversity corridors. The idea was floated at a recent urban planning forum in Chennai.
The concept envisions high-density vertical structures that are not merely concrete and glass, but living ecosystems. Each building would be cloaked in dense vegetation, with terraces, balconies, and facades designed to host native trees, shrubs, and even small wildlife habitats.
India's rapid urbanisation has created heat islands, choked air, and fragmented natural habitats. The proposal argues that traditional horizontal sprawl is unsustainable. Vertical forests, proponents say, can pack more people into a smaller footprint while actively cooling the local climate.
A single skyscraper covered in plants can absorb tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, filter particulate matter, and release oxygen. The greenery also reduces the need for air conditioning by providing natural insulation.
The most striking element is the integration of biodiversity corridors. These would be elevated green pathways linking one vertical forest to another, allowing birds, butterflies, and small mammals to move freely across urban areas.
Such corridors, backers argue, can help reverse biodiversity loss that accompanies city building. They would connect parks, green roofs, and vertical gardens into a seamless network, creating a habitat that coexists with millions of residents.
Chennai, with its coastal ecology and vulnerability to heat, is seen as a testbed. The city's existing green cover is under pressure from construction. The proposal suggests that new high-rises could be mandated to include vertical forest elements.
Critics point out that building and maintaining vertical forests is expensive. Irrigation systems, soil weight, structural reinforcement, and specialist horticulture add significant costs. Indian developers often shy away from such upfront investments.
However, advocates argue that long-term savings โ lower energy bills, improved public health, higher property values โ offset the initial outlay. They also note that Milan's Bosco Verticale towers and Singapore's Gardens by the Bay have proven the model works in dense urban settings.
Municipal corporations would need to amend building bylaws, offer incentives like floor space index (FSI) bonuses, and invest in public green infrastructure. Without policy support, the idea may remain a talking point.
The proposal now awaits discussion by urban development authorities. A pilot project in a Chennai ward or along a major arterial road could test the concept. For now, it remains an ambitious blueprint for a greener, denser Indian city.
