IIT Guwahati Student Drowns in Brahmaputra, Another Rescued

Guwahati: A student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati drowned in the Brahmaputra river on Sunday after an alleged accidental fall. Another student who was with him was rescued, officials said.

The incident took place near North Guwahati, a stretch of the river that runs alongside the sprawling IIT campus. Preliminary reports suggest the two students had gone to the riverbank and slipped into the water. Rescue teams were alerted immediately, but by the time the second student was pulled out, the first had been swept away by the current.

Search and Rescue Operations

Local authorities, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police, launched a search operation soon after receiving the alert. Boats were pressed into service to scour the river, but the strong current and murky waters hampered efforts.

The body of the deceased student was recovered later in the day, officials confirmed. The identity of the student has not been officially released, pending notification of the family. The rescued student is reported to be in stable condition and is being counselled.

Accidental Fall Theory

Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the fall. Initial statements suggest it was accidental, but officials have not ruled out other possibilities. "We are recording statements from eyewitnesses and the rescued student to ascertain exactly what happened," a senior police officer said.

The Brahmaputra, especially during the monsoon season, is known for its treacherous currents. Riverbank areas near educational institutions have seen similar incidents in the past, prompting repeated warnings from authorities.

Campus in Mourning

IIT Guwahati has expressed deep grief over the incident. In a statement, the institute said it was extending full support to the family of the deceased and would assist in all formalities. The campus community, already reeling from the shock, is likely to hold a condolence meeting.

This tragedy comes amidst a broader pattern of river-related accidents in Assam during the monsoon. Just days ago, a young woman from Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, drowned in the Brahmaputra floods, highlighting the recurring danger posed by the swelling river.

The incident has reignited concerns about safety measures along the riverfront. While the IIT campus has designated areas, the river remains accessible at several points. Students and locals often venture close to the water, especially during breaks.

Authorities are expected to review warning signage and possibly increase patrolling in the area. The district administration has been urged to issue fresh advisories, particularly for young people, about the perils of venturing into the river during the monsoon.
