
Gandhinagar, one of Bengaluru's busiest commercial hubs, has become the first locality in the city to receive an integrated fire hydrant system along its newly laid white-topped roads. The installation, completed recently, marks a significant step in upgrading fire safety infrastructure in an area known for its dense clusters of shops, godowns and foot traffic.
The Gandhinagar market area has long been considered high-risk for fire incidents due to the congested layout and the nature of goods stored and sold there. In the past, firefighters often struggled to access water sources quickly, leading to delays in dousing flames. The new hydrant system is designed to provide a reliable and immediate water supply, reducing response time during emergencies.
Officials from the Bengaluru Fire and Emergency Services have confirmed that the hydrants are strategically placed along the white-topped stretches, ensuring adequate coverage for the surrounding buildings. Each hydrant is connected to the main water supply line, allowing fire tenders to refill without having to travel to distant water sources.
Unlike standalone hydrants that depend on tanker water, the integrated system is linked directly to the civic water network. This means that in the event of a fire, the pressure from the main line can be used to fight the blaze even before fire engines arrive. The system also includes multiple connection points, enabling several fire tenders to draw water simultaneously.
Local traders have welcomed the move, noting that the area has seen minor fire incidents in the past that could have escalated. "We feel safer knowing that water is now available right here," said a shopkeeper in the area, who did not wish to be named. The system is expected to be particularly useful during peak summer months when water scarcity often hampers firefighting efforts.
The hydrant installation is part of a broader infrastructure overhaul of Gandhinagar's roads. The white-topping work, which began earlier this year, was aimed at improving road durability and reducing dust. The integrated hydrant system was included in the design to avoid digging up freshly laid roads later.
Civic authorities have stated that the project was executed in coordination with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to ensure seamless connectivity. However, they have not yet disclosed the total cost of the hydrant network or the timeline for extending similar systems to other parts of the city.
While Gandhinagar is the first to benefit, the model could be replicated in other high-density commercial zones such as Chickpet, Shivajinagar and KR Market. Fire department officials have indicated that they are studying the performance of the Gandhinagar system before proposing further installations. A detailed review is expected in the coming months, and maintenance protocols are being drawn up to keep the hydrants functional round the clock.
For now, residents and traders in Gandhinagar can count on a faster, more efficient fire response. The success of this pilot could set the template for how Bengaluru tackles fire safety in its most vulnerable neighbourhoods.
