Two Andhra Pradesh men arrested for gold chain snatching spree

Hyderabad police have arrested two men from Andhra Pradesh in connection with a series of gold chain snatchings reported across the city. The accused were taken into custody following a coordinated operation based on technical surveillance and tip-offs, officials said on Tuesday.

Arrest and Recovery

The suspects, whose identities have not been officially released, were apprehended from a hideout on the city's outskirts. Police recovered a quantity of gold ornaments, including chains, along with some cash and mobile phones believed to be stolen.

According to a senior police officer, the duo had been operating in busy market areas and public transport hubs, targeting women and elderly pedestrians. Their method involved approaching victims on motorcycles and snatching chains before fleeing.

Pattern of Crimes

Preliminary inquiries suggest the accused were involved in at least half a dozen similar incidents in the past few weeks. Police are now verifying their involvement in other unsolved cases across Hyderabad and neighbouring districts.

The arrests came after a series of complaints prompted increased patrolling and deployment of plainclothes officers in vulnerable zones. A special team was formed to track the suspects' movements, leading to their capture.

Investigation Ongoing

Investigators are questioning the accused to determine if they acted alone or had local support. They are also trying to trace the original owners of the recovered items, many of which have unique engravings or designs that may help identify victims.

Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. They have also advised women to avoid displaying jewellery prominently in crowded places and to use secure bags.

Legal Proceedings

The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to robbery and theft. They are expected to be produced before a local court later today, where police will seek their remand for further questioning.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests, as some stolen items are yet to be recovered. The investigation is being closely monitored by senior officers.
