A pioneering archaeologist and art historian, Agrawal is credited with bringing scientific rigour to the exploration of India's civilisational heritage. His work bridged the gap between traditional scholarship and modern analytical methods, laying the groundwork for a more nuanced understanding of the subcontinent's ancient cultures.
Born in 1904 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Agrawal was a polymath. He was not just an archaeologist but also a numismatist, epigraphist, and a deep student of Sanskrit and ancient Indian texts. His academic journey took him from Banaras Hindu University to the University of Lucknow, where he later served as a professor and head of the department of ancient Indian history, culture, and archaeology.
Agrawal's unique strength was his ability to combine textual knowledge with hands-on fieldwork.
