World Breastfeeding Week drew to a close at Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai on Friday, capping a week of activities aimed at reinforcing the importance of breastfeeding for infant health. The hospital, one of the city's oldest and largest public medical institutions, organised a series of programmes that saw active participation from expectant mothers, new parents, and healthcare staff.

A week of awareness and support

The celebrations, held from August 1 to August 7, were centred on spreading awareness about early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life. Medical officers, paediatricians, and nursing staff conducted interactive sessions, addressing common concerns and dispelling myths that often deter mothers from breastfeeding.

According to hospital sources, the programmes included practical demonstrations on correct positioning and latching techniques. Counsellors were on hand to guide mothers, particularly those facing difficulties such as low milk supply or nipple pain.
