Indian stock market investors woke up to a host of global and domestic cues on Friday morning. From Gift Nifty signalling a firm opening to crude oil prices cooling off, here are seven key factors that could influence trading through the day.
Gift Nifty, the early indicator of the Indian equity market, was trading higher, hinting at a gap-up start for the Nifty 50 on Friday. The derivative contract on the NSE IFSC was quoting around the 24,900 level, up from Thursday's close, suggesting buying interest at the open.
Traders will watch if the index can hold above the crucial 24,800 support level in the first hour of trade.
International crude oil benchmarks traded lower in early Asian hours. Brent crude slipped below $76 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate hovered near $72. A drop in crude prices is a positive for India, which imports over 80% of its oil needs, as it eases inflationary pressure and improves the fiscal outlook.
Lower oil prices also tend to boost margins for oil marketing companies and reduce the import bill, supporting the rupee.
Asian equities were trading with a mixed bias on Friday. While Japanese and South Korean indices edged higher, Chinese shares were subdued. US futures were flat after a lacklustre session on Wall Street overnight, where the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed marginally lower.
The muted global sentiment could cap gains in Indian markets despite positive domestic triggers.
The Indian rupee opened steady against the US dollar, tracking the softer greenback overseas. The dollar index was hovering near 103.5, down from recent highs. A stable rupee is crucial for foreign portfolio inflows, which have been volatile in recent weeks.
Any sharp movement in the dollar or US Treasury yields will be closely monitored by currency traders.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the cash market on Thursday, offloading shares worth around โน1,200 crore, according to provisional data. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), on the other hand, bought shares worth nearly โน1,500 crore, cushioning the fall.
Market participants will track whether FII selling intensifies or reverses, as sustained outflows could weigh on benchmark indices.
The earnings season continues, with several mid-cap and large-cap companies scheduled to announce their June quarter results later in the day. Investors will also look out for any upcoming economic data releases, including industrial production numbers due next week.
Analysts say that earnings beats or misses could drive stock-specific moves more than the broader index.
The Nifty 50 has been trading in a range of 24,500 to 25,000 for the past few sessions. A decisive close above 25,000 could trigger a fresh rally, while a fall below 24,500 may lead to further profit booking.
Market experts advise traders to keep a close eye on the Bank Nifty index, which has been relatively weak, and the volatility index (India VIX) for any signs of stress.
As the day progresses, the focus will shift to the European market opening and any geopolitical developments that could impact oil prices or risk sentiment. With no major domestic event scheduled, the market's direction will largely depend on global cues and FII flows.
