Hyderabad Police have issued a fresh warning to women about a novel cyber fraud called 'rent-a-boyfriend'. The scam, which has surfaced on social media platforms, involves fraudsters posing as companions-for-hire to lure victims into a web of extortion and blackmail.

According to a statement from the police, the fraudsters create fake profiles on dating apps and social media, offering the services of a 'boyfriend' for a fee. Once a woman shows interest, she is asked to pay an advance, after which the trouble begins.

How the scam works

The modus operandi, as described by the police, is deceptively simple. The fraudster initiates contact, builds a rapport, and then demands money for the 'service'. After the initial payment, they escalate their demands, threatening to leak private conversations or photos if the victim does not comply.

In some cases, the fraudsters also pose as police officers or legal authorities, claiming that the woman has violated a law by engaging their services, and demand 'fines' to settle the matter. This dual-layered deception has caught many victims off guard.

Police advisory to women

In their advisory, the Hyderabad Police have urged women to exercise caution while interacting with strangers on social media. They have specifically warned against sharing personal information, photographs, or financial details with unknown persons online.

"Do not fall for such traps. If someone demands money or threatens you, do not pay. Instead, approach the police immediately," the advisory stated. The police have also encouraged women to verify the authenticity of any online service before making payments.

Rising cyber fraud cases

This warning comes amid a spate of similar cyber frauds reported across the country. From fake job offers to lottery scams, fraudsters are constantly devising new ways to exploit online users. The 'rent-a-boyfriend' scam appears to be another addition to this growing list, specifically targeting women who may be seeking companionship in the digital space.

Cyber crime experts point out that the anonymity of the internet makes it easy for fraudsters to operate. They often use untraceable payment methods and disposable SIM cards, making it difficult for law enforcement to track them down.

What to do if targeted

The police have advised women who have fallen victim to such scams to file a complaint immediately. They can reach out to the cyber crime cell through the national helpline number 1930 or visit the nearest police station. Victims are also urged to preserve all communication records, including messages, call logs, and payment receipts, to help in the investigation.

Officials have not yet confirmed the number of complaints received or the total amount defrauded so far. However, they have assured that efforts are on to identify the perpetrators.

As online interactions become more common, the police have reiterated the need for digital vigilance. "Your safety is in your hands. Think twice before trusting someone you have never met in person," the advisory added.

The Hyderabad Police are expected to launch an awareness campaign on social media to educate women about this and other similar scams. In the meantime, they urge the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
