Jharkhand Talks Fail Again; Student Stir to Continue

Talks between the Jharkhand government and another faction of protesting student aspirants ended without a breakthrough on Saturday, prolonging a stir that has gripped the state for weeks. The delegation, led by Devendra Nath Mahto, met officials for the second round of negotiations, but both sides emerged with little to show. The protest, centred on alleged irregularities in state examinations, shows no sign of winding down.

No headway in second round

The government has been trying to pacify multiple factions of job aspirants who have been demanding action against those responsible for paper leaks and other irregularities. Saturday's talks with the Mahto-led faction followed a similar deadlock in earlier discussions with other groups. Officials familiar with the proceedings said the core demands of the protesters remain unchanged.

Those demands include a fresh examination schedule, a transparent recruitment process, and strict punishment for officials found guilty. The government, for its part, has offered to address grievances through a feedback mechanism. Late on Friday, it opened an email ID for aspirants to submit their concerns directly, a move seen as an attempt to widen the dialogue.

CID summons JPSC members

In a related development, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has summoned three serving members of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) in connection with the exam row. The summons marks an escalation in the probe, which has already implicated several lower-rung officials. The three members are expected to appear before the investigating agency in the coming days.

The CID's move signals that the investigation is reaching higher up the hierarchy. Protesters have long alleged that the malpractices could not have occurred without the knowledge of senior commission officials. The summoning is likely to intensify pressure on the state administration to act swiftly.

Protesters dig in, ABVP joins

Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) began a march to the Jharkhand Chief Minister's residence on Saturday, expressing solidarity with the student protesters. The march added a political dimension to the agitation, with the ABVP demanding immediate resolution of the crisis. Police have been deployed along the route, though no untoward incident has been reported so far.

The student protesters, many of whom have been camping at key locations in Ranchi, remain adamant. They have rejected piecemeal concessions and insist on a complete overhaul of the recruitment process. The government's offer of an email feedback system has been met with scepticism, with many calling it a stalling tactic.

What lies ahead

With Saturday's talks failing to produce a breakthrough, the onus now shifts to the state government to craft a more substantive offer. The CID's summons to JPSC members could provide a face-saving path for both sides if it leads to concrete action. For now, the stir continues, and the city remains on edge as protesters vow to escalate if their demands are not met.

The coming week will be crucial. If the government fails to announce a concrete action plan, the agitation could spread to other districts. Observers say the administration is running out of time to find a solution that satisfies both the protesters and the political compulsions of the ruling dispensation.
