City gears up for the wet season

Chennai is pulling up its socks well ahead of the northeast monsoon, with the Greater Chennai Corporation rolling out a slew of preparedness measures. The focus is on clearing stormwater drains, desilting waterways, and ensuring that the city's ageing drainage network can handle the heavy downpours that typically arrive between October and December.

Officials say the civic body has mapped out low-lying and flood-prone areas, setting up control rooms to monitor waterlogging in real time. The aim is to respond faster than in previous years, when several neighbourhoods went under water after intense spells.

Desilting and drain clearance on war footing

Work is underway across all 15 zones of the corporation. Teams have been deployed to remove silt and debris from major canals, including the Buckingham Canal and the Otteri Nullah, which are critical for stormwater runoff. Residents in many areas have reported seeing increased activity by corporation workers, with heavy machinery being used to dredge choked stretches.

According to officials, the desilting of minor drains is also being prioritised, especially in interior residential streets where blockages often cause localised flooding. The corporation has set a deadline to complete the bulk of the work before the monsoon intensifies, though the exact completion date has not been confirmed.

Public urged to chip in

Civic authorities are appealing to Chennai's residents to do their bit. They have asked people to clear roof-top debris, ensure that building-level rainwater harvesting structures are functional, and avoid dumping plastic waste into stormwater drains. Such blockages, officials say, are a major reason why water does not recede quickly after heavy rain.

Residents' welfare associations are being roped in to spread the message and report any choked drains in their localities. The corporation has also launched a helpline and a mobile app-based grievance redressal system, though the numbers and app details are yet to be widely publicised.

Volunteers and mock drills

In addition to infrastructure work, the city is preparing its human response. Volunteers are being trained in first aid, rescue operations, and emergency communication. Mock drills are being conducted in vulnerable pockets to test the coordination between the corporation, fire services, police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Officials said the drills have helped identify gaps in evacuation plans and relief distribution. They are also stocking up on pumps, boats, and temporary shelter materials at strategic locations across the city, so that equipment can be moved quickly if needed.
