Jharkhand student protest: Round 2 talks fail, deadlock persists

Ranchi: The second round of negotiations between the Jharkhand government and student protesters over the JSSC 2024 recruitment exam irregularities ended on Saturday without a breakthrough, prolonging the deadlock that has gripped the state for weeks.

The talks, held at the state secretariat, saw both sides remain firm on their positions. While the government offered to examine specific grievances, the students insisted on a full investigation into the paper leak and cancellation of the exam. No official statement was issued after the meeting, but sources said the dialogue was 'cordial yet inconclusive'.

Allegations of political manoeuvring

Shortly after the talks concluded, the student body leading the agitation accused the government of deliberate delay tactics. In a press briefing, representatives alleged that the administration was engaging in 'political manoeuvring' to dilute their demands.

The students have been demanding a CID probe into the leak of question papers, which they claim compromised the selection process for thousands of candidates. A bombshell CID report, which reportedly details 120 leaked answers circulated via WhatsApp, has added fuel to the fire. The report, though not yet made public in full, is said to expose a widespread network of malpractice.

Government officials, on their part, have denied any attempt to stall. They maintain that the process is being handled with due diligence and that a fair resolution is the priority. However, with each round of talks ending in a stalemate, trust on both sides appears to be eroding.

Fasting leader's health worsens

Complicating matters is the deteriorating health of a student leader who has been on an indefinite fast for over a week. Medical teams attending to him have advised immediate hospitalisation, but the leader has refused, vowing to continue the fast until the government concedes to the core demands.

His condition has drawn attention from across the country. Actor and poet Piyush Mishra has publicly backed the protesters, lending his voice to their cause. In a social media post, Mishra praised the students' resolve and called for a transparent resolution. His support has energised the protesters, who see it as a sign of growing public sympathy.

Fresh talks announced

Despite the failure of the second round, the government has announced that it will hold fresh talks with the students. The date has not been confirmed, but officials indicate it could happen within the next 48 hours. The student body has agreed to attend, though they have warned that this is their 'final attempt at a negotiated settlement'.

On the ground, the protest site near the state assembly remains tense but peaceful. Hundreds of students continue to camp there, braving the monsoon rains. Local shops and businesses in the area have reported a drop in footfall, as the agitation shows no signs of winding down.

The JSSC 2024 exam, conducted for multiple government department posts, has been mired in controversy since allegations of paper leakage first surfaced. The state government has already ordered a probe, but the students argue that its scope is too narrow. They want a fresh exam and punitive action against those involved in the leak.

As the standoff enters another week, the pressure is mounting on both sides to find a way out. The state administration cannot afford a prolonged disruption, and the students, with public opinion shifting in their favour, are unlikely to back down easily.
