Techie killed as rods jutting out of truck pierce car in Chennai

Chennai: A 28-year-old software engineer died on Monday morning after steel rods jutting out of a truck pierced the windshield of his car, in a gruesome accident on a city road. The victim, identified as R. Karthik, was driving to work when the incident occurred around 8:30 am near the Madhya Kailash junction on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), a busy IT corridor.

According to police, a truck carrying steel rods was moving ahead of Karthik's car when the rods, which extended beyond the vehicle's length, suddenly pierced the rear windshield and struck him. The impact was fatal, and Karthik died on the spot. Passers-by alerted the traffic police, who arrived at the scene and diverted traffic for nearly an hour.

Accident details emerge

Initial reports suggest that the truck driver may not have been aware of the rods protruding from his vehicle. The rods, which were longer than the truck's bed, appeared to have swung or shifted during transit, causing them to jut out dangerously. Police have seized the truck and are questioning the driver, who has been identified but not yet named officially.

The victim's car, a white hatchback, sustained severe damage to its front windshield, with several rods penetrating the glass and cabin. Emergency responders, including fire and rescue personnel, had to cut through parts of the car to extricate the body.
