Two workers were killed on Tuesday morning when a section of an underpass construction site caved in near Bengaluru. The incident took place around 9:30 am at a location on the city's outskirts, where work on a new vehicular underpass was underway.

According to initial reports, the workers were engaged in excavation work when the soil and debris suddenly gave way, trapping them beneath. A third worker managed to escape with minor injuries and raised the alarm.

Rescue and recovery

Police and fire services personnel arrived at the scene within minutes. Using earth movers and manual labour, rescue teams worked for over two hours to reach the buried workers. Both were pulled out unconscious and declared dead at a nearby hospital.

The deceased have been identified as daily-wage labourers from other states, though their names have not been officially released. The site has been cordoned off, and work has been suspended pending further orders.

Investigation under way

Senior officials from the Bengaluru development authority and the contractor's team are on site. A preliminary inquiry has been ordered to determine whether safety norms were violated, particularly regarding soil stabilisation and shoring during excavation.

Labour department officials are also examining the contractor's compliance with worker safety protocols. A senior police officer said a case of negligence may be registered if the probe finds lapses.

Background and concerns

The underpass is part of a larger infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion on a busy arterial road. Such projects have faced scrutiny in the past over worker safety and project delays.

Local residents and labour rights groups have demanded compensation for the victims' families and stricter enforcement of safety measures at all construction sites across the city.

Officials have not yet confirmed the compensation amount, but standard rules under the Building and Other Construction Workers Act may apply.

The investigation report is expected within a week, which could lead to action against the contractor. Authorities have also been asked to conduct a safety audit of all ongoing underpass and metro construction sites in the city.
