
Chennai’s natural wealth goes far beyond its beaches and parks, according to environmental activist Jayshree Vencatesan. In a recent interaction, she said the city’s biological diversity is far from fully mapped, with many species and ecosystems still waiting to be documented.
“There is much more to unravel about Chennai’s biological diversity,” Vencatesan said, underlining that urban growth and climate pressures make such exploration urgent, not optional.
Chennai’s landscape includes the Pallikaranai marsh, the Adyar estuary, and the sprawling Guindy National Park. These green and blue patches host a variety of flora and fauna, yet scientific records remain incomplete.
Vencatesan, who has worked on biodiversity documentation for years, pointed out that many invertebrate species, fungi, and even small mammals in these zones have never been formally catalogued. Without baseline data, she warned, conservation efforts risk targeting the wrong priorities.
The activist also stressed that the city’s wetlands and water bodies are not just scenic spots — they are functional ecosystems that support migratory birds, filter water, and buffer floods. Their ecological roles are often underestimated in urban planning.
Vencatesan believes that ordinary Chennaites can play a pivotal role in filling knowledge gaps. She urged residents to observe and report wildlife in their neighbourhoods, from garden insects to nocturnal birds, and to share findings with researchers.
“Citizen science is not just about data collection; it builds a sense of ownership over local nature,” she said. Schools, colleges, and resident welfare associations, she added, could become hubs for such monitoring.
This participatory approach, she argued, would also help officials make informed decisions about land use, infrastructure projects, and conservation zones. Policies grounded in real-time data are more likely to succeed than those based on assumptions.
The activist’s remarks come at a time when Chennai is expanding rapidly, with new housing and commercial corridors eating into peri-urban green cover. She cautioned that every lost patch of vegetation could mean losing species that are yet to be named.
Vencatesan also highlighted the need for long-term ecological monitoring, not just one-off surveys. Seasonal changes, breeding patterns, and migration routes require sustained observation to be understood properly.
She noted that Chennai’s biodiversity is not limited to protected areas. Roadside trees, temple tanks, and even vacant plots support a surprising range of life, from pollinators to small predators. These micro-habitats deserve attention too.
Officials and researchers have not yet released any specific new species discoveries from Chennai, but Vencatesan’s comments suggest that such announcements may be forthcoming if systematic surveys are undertaken.
The coming months could see renewed calls for a comprehensive biodiversity register for Chennai, potentially involving multiple government departments and research institutions. Vencatesan’s push for public engagement may also inspire pilot projects in selected neighbourhoods.
For now, her message is clear: Chennai’s natural history is still being written, and every resident can contribute a page.
