
After a dry spell that stretched patience across the country, rain has finally returned to parts of India. The recent showers have brought some respite from the heat and eased concerns in a few regions. But the bigger picture remains far from settled.
The national monsoon deficit, which had been widening through July and early August, has seen only a marginal improvement. According to data from the India Meteorological Department, the seasonal rainfall total is still below the long-period average. In plain terms, the country needs sustained, widespread rain to make up for the shortfall — not just scattered spells.
Adding to the uncertainty is the possible return of El Niño. The climate phenomenon, marked by warming of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to suppress monsoon rainfall in India. Forecasts suggest that El Niño conditions could strengthen in the coming weeks, which would complicate the recovery story.
Meteorologists have been tracking sea surface temperatures closely. If El Niño develops fully, it could shorten the effective rainy window and leave many districts high and dry. For farmers who have already delayed sowing, this would be a serious blow.
The recent revival has been uneven. Some states, particularly in the central and western parts of the country, have received healthy downpours. Reservoirs in these areas have seen a modest uptick in storage levels. But other regions, especially in the east and northeast, continue to report large deficits.
The overall monsoon deficiency, which stood at around 9 percent at the end of July, has improved only slightly. A single week of good rain does not erase months of below-normal precipitation. The soil moisture in many areas remains low, and groundwater levels are still under stress.
The erratic behaviour of the monsoon this year is not an isolated event. Over the past decade, India has witnessed increasingly unpredictable rainfall patterns — long dry spells punctuated by short, intense bursts. This variability is consistent with broader climate trends observed across South Asia.
Experts point to a mix of factors, including warming oceans and changing atmospheric circulation. The result is a monsoon that is harder to forecast and harder to rely on. For a country where agriculture employs nearly half the workforce, this poses a direct challenge to rural livelihoods and food security.
The next few weeks will be decisive. If the monsoon picks up pace across the core rain-fed zones, the deficit could narrow further. But if El Niño asserts itself, the season may end with a significant shortfall.
Forecasters are urging state governments to stay prepared for both scenarios. Reservoir management, crop advisories, and contingency planning will all depend on how the weather unfolds in the coming weeks.
For now, the rain has returned — but the monsoon story is far from over. All eyes remain on the sky.
