Countdown begins for overnight Vande Bharat service

The much-awaited Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper train is inching closer to its launch, with railway officials indicating that final preparations are underway. The service, which has been in the works for months, is expected to significantly alter overnight travel between the two tech hubs.

Passengers have long demanded a faster, more comfortable alternative to the existing overnight trains. The new sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat is designed to fill that gap, offering modern amenities and reduced journey times.

What the new service promises

Unlike the chair-car Vande Bharat trains that currently operate on day routes, this sleeper version will feature fully reclining berths, onboard Wi-Fi, and improved catering services. The train is expected to cover the distance in roughly 15-16 hours, shaving off a couple of hours compared to conventional express trains.

Railway sources say the train will likely depart Bengaluru in the evening and arrive in Mumbai the next morning, allowing passengers to save on hotel costs and gain a full working day. The coaches have been manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and have undergone extensive trials.

Infrastructure and readiness

Track upgrades and signalling improvements along the route have been completed to support the train's higher operating speeds. Officials have also conducted trial runs to test braking systems, ride comfort, and safety protocols.

While the exact launch date has not been officially announced, sources suggest that the inaugural run could happen within the next few weeks. The Railway Board is expected to release the schedule and fare structure shortly after final clearance.

Passenger expectations

Frequent travellers between Bengaluru and Mumbai have welcomed the development, though some remain cautious about pricing. The fare is likely to be higher than existing sleeper class rates, but lower than air travel, making it an attractive mid-range option.
