The planned upgrades include wider footpaths, dedicated cycling tracks, and improved street lighting. Bus stops and metro stations along the corridors will be better integrated, with last-mile connectivity options such as shared autos and e-rickshaws.
Traffic signals will be synchronised to reduce waiting times, and smart sensors will monitor congestion in real time. The authorities have also proposed green spaces and tree cover to make the stretches more walkable and pleasant.
OMR is the city's IT corridor, hosting hundreds of tech parks and employing lakhs of professionals. Radial Road, which connects the city to the southern suburbs, is equally vital for daily commuters. Together, they handle a significant share of Chennai's vehicular traffic.
For years, these roads have been plagued by bottlenecks, especially during peak hours. The new model corridor plan is expected to ease congestion and cut travel time, though officials have not yet shared specific timelines or cost estimates.
