
Adhering to the DASH diet โ a plan originally designed to combat hypertension โ may significantly reduce the risk of developing obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), even among people who lead largely sedentary lives, according to a new study.
The research, reported by EMJ, suggests that dietary patterns rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy could offset some of the dangers associated with physical inactivity. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that what we eat influences not just heart health, but the quality and safety of our sleep.
Researchers analysed data from a large cohort, examining the relationship between DASH diet adherence and the incidence of OSA. The key finding: individuals who closely followed the DASH eating plan showed a markedly lower risk of developing the disorder, compared to those with poor dietary habits.

Still, the dietary pattern already carries endorsement from major health bodies for cardiovascular benefits, so adding sleep health to its list of perks would be a welcome development.
