Damaged Stretch Irks Commuters

Parts of the road connecting Vadapalani and Kodambakkam in Chennai have been left damaged due to ongoing work by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The stretch, used daily by thousands of motorists, has developed potholes and uneven surfaces, making travel bumpy and risky.

Local residents and daily commuters say the condition has worsened over the past few weeks. Two-wheeler riders are particularly affected, with several narrowly avoiding falls. Auto and cab drivers are taking detours to avoid the damaged patches, adding to travel time.

Metro Work Blamed for Deterioration

The damage is attributed to heavy machinery and excavation work carried out by CMRL as part of its Phase II extension. The repeated movement of construction vehicles and temporary diversions have taken a toll on the road surface.

According to residents, the stretch was already in a poor state before the metro work began. The added pressure from construction activity has made it worse. Waterlogging during recent rains has further weakened the road, leaving deep cracks and loose gravel.

Commuters Demand Quick Fix

Commuters are urging authorities to repair the road at the earliest. Many have taken to social media to flag the issue, sharing photos of the damaged stretch. Some have also lodged complaints with local ward offices.

“We understand metro work is necessary, but they must ensure roads are safe for us,” said a regular commuter on the route. Another added that the stretch becomes nearly impassable during peak hours.

Officials Yet to Respond

CMRL officials have not yet issued a statement on the matter. The Greater Chennai Corporation, which is responsible for road maintenance, has also remained silent. It is unclear when repairs will begin or if CMRL will bear the cost.

In similar cases, the corporation has asked agencies to restore roads after completing underground work. However, with metro work still underway, a permanent fix may take time.

Authorities are expected to address the issue soon. Commuters hope for temporary patching at least until the metro project is completed.
